Conditions

Summary

Injuries to the neck following whiplash trauma (whiplash injury) are one of the most common causes of neck pain and disability in the developed world. The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in combination with physical and psychological measures, to identify structural lesions of the neck following whiplash injury. The ability to identify and differentiate the relationship between structural lesions and physical and psychosocial measures in whiplash patients will potentially enable more specific and timely management thereby potentially reducing the number of patients who develop chronic symptoms.

Plain Language Summary

Simplified for easier understanding

This study is using MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans to look for physical damage to the neck (such as muscle, ligament, or disc injuries) in people who have suffered a whiplash injury from a car accident. The researchers also want to see how these physical findings relate to pain levels, disability, and psychological factors. The goal is to help doctors better identify and treat people who develop long-term symptoms after whiplash. You may be eligible if: - You are between 18 and 35 years of age - You had a whiplash injury from a motor vehicle accident and have neck pain and disability (classified as WAD Grade II), either within the past 2 weeks (acute) or between 12 weeks and 3 years ago (chronic), OR - You are a healthy control participant with no neck pain from a car accident You may NOT be eligible if: - Your whiplash injury is classified as Grade 0, I, III, or IV (very mild or severe) - You have had a previous whiplash injury, spinal surgery, or spinal joint disease - You are pregnant - You have any reason you cannot have an MRI scan Talk to your doctor about whether this trial might be right for you.

This is a simplified summary. Always discuss eligibility with your doctor before enrolling in a clinical trial.
