Conditions

Summary

General anaesthesia for caesarean section is associated with higher mortality and serious complication rates in the mother than regional anaesthesia. Over the last decade there has been a trend towards less frequent use of GA. There is little data on current anaesthetic practice for GA for caesarean section, and a number of changes to practice have been recommended and new drugs and technolgies been available in recent years. We hope our study will provide new information about practice patterns, certain risks and complications, and identify potential areas of research.

Plain Language Summary

Simplified for easier understanding

This study is collecting information about how general anaesthesia is currently used for caesarean sections across Australia and New Zealand. General anaesthesia (where patients are fully put to sleep) is used less often than regional anaesthesia (such as an epidural or spinal block) for caesarean sections, but it is sometimes necessary. Researchers want to understand current practice, identify complications, and find areas where care could be improved. You may be eligible if: - You are 18 years of age or older - You are having an elective or emergency caesarean section under general anaesthesia between June 2005 and May 2006 You may NOT be eligible if: - You are under 18 years of age Talk to your doctor about whether this trial might be right for you.

This is a simplified summary. Always discuss eligibility with your doctor before enrolling in a clinical trial.

The aims of this prospective survey will be to collect contemporary perioperative data in parturients undergoing general anaesthesia for caesarean section in Australasia. The 2 key objectives will be 1. To identify the number of patients identified as difficult to intubate and the approximte incidence of failed intubation in an Australasian population 2. To approximate the incidence of awareness. Other objectives will be to define patient demographics and details of general anaesthesia for caesarean section in contemporary Australasian practice.
