Plain Language Summary

Simplified for easier understanding

This study is testing a small swallowable capsule camera (called PillCam ESO) to check for enlarged veins in the food pipe (called esophageal varices). These enlarged veins can be a complication of liver disease and can bleed dangerously. The capsule is swallowed and takes pictures as it travels through, offering an alternative to a traditional endoscopy (a camera inserted through the mouth). You may be eligible if: - You are 18 years or older - You have already been told you have esophageal varices and need a check-up, OR you have signs of chronic liver disease and your doctor recommends an examination of your food pipe - You are willing to undergo standard upper gastrointestinal endoscopy as part of the study You may NOT be eligible if: - You have difficulty swallowing - You have a known Zenker's diverticulum (a pouch in the throat) - You have previously had endoscopic treatment for esophageal varices - You have or are suspected to have a bowel obstruction - You have a cardiac pacemaker or other implanted electrical medical device - You are pregnant - You are scheduled for an MRI scan within 7 days of swallowing the capsule - You have had prior abdominal surgery on the gastrointestinal tract (other than appendix or gallbladder removal) - You are currently taking part in another clinical trial Talk to your doctor about whether this trial might be right for you.
