Plain Language Summary

Simplified for easier understanding

This study is testing whether Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) — a type of talking therapy — can help people stop taking benzodiazepines (sleeping pills or anti-anxiety medicines like Valium/diazepam) after using them long-term. Many people find it very hard to stop these medicines because of dependence and withdrawal symptoms. This study looks at whether CBT gives people the skills and confidence to taper off and stay off benzodiazepines, compared to not receiving CBT. You may be eligible if: - You have been taking a benzodiazepine every day for at least 3 continuous months - You are currently on a stable dose (between 5 and 40 mg per day of diazepam, or the equivalent) You may NOT be eligible if: - You currently have a diagnosis of a psychotic disorder - You have a major brain disorder - You have current dependence on alcohol or other non-benzodiazepine drugs - You are currently receiving another form of psychological therapy - You are pregnant or breastfeeding Talk to your doctor about whether this trial might be right for you.
