Plain Language Summary

Simplified for easier understanding

This study is looking at whether a type of heart ultrasound called transthoracic echocardiography can be used to measure the amount of blood in the heart's left chamber during hip replacement surgery. This non-invasive test may help doctors better monitor patients during the operation to keep them safe. You may be eligible if: - You are scheduled for a planned (elective) right-sided total hip joint replacement You may NOT be eligible if: - You have a medical reason that prevents you from having spinal anaesthesia - You have poorly controlled heart failure Talk to your doctor about whether this trial might be right for you.

This is a simplified summary. Always discuss eligibility with your doctor before enrolling in a clinical trial.

The aim of this project is to assess the abiltiy of the anaesthetist to estimate volume status of the patient utilising traditional clinical methods, when compared to measurements obtained by transthoracic echocardiography. A transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) is done at baseline (before the spinal anaestheisa is performed), immediately after spinal anesthesia is performed and after the hip replacement surgery is complete.
