Summary

The aim for the proposed study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a case management approach using senior trauma nurses in providing trauma care services to children who have been moderately or severely injured and hospitalised. We aim to determine the effectiveness of such an approach using a randomised control trial with outcomes of improving clinical information gathering, service quality, and clinician-patient-parent communication and thus patients’ satisfaction. It is hypothesised that the case management approach can achieve twice the clinical information gathered in comparison to the controls. It is further hypothesised that the case management approach can improve both patient and family satisfaction significantly.

Plain Language Summary

Simplified for easier understanding

This study is testing whether having a dedicated senior trauma nurse as a case manager improves care for children who are admitted to hospital after a serious injury. When children are badly hurt, they often need care from many different specialists. A case manager acts as a coordinator — gathering information, communicating between teams, and keeping families informed. The study looks at whether this approach leads to better information gathering, higher quality care, and greater satisfaction for patients and families. You may be eligible if: - Your child was admitted to hospital following a traumatic injury and stayed for more than 4 hours - Your child's injury was serious enough to trigger a 'trauma call' (a hospital alert for serious injury) You may NOT be eligible if: - Your child's care was not able to be completed at Children's Hospital at Westmead for unexpected reasons - Your child passed away soon after admission before a full treatment plan could begin - Your child was admitted for less than 4 hours Talk to your doctor about whether this trial might be right for you.

This is a simplified summary. Always discuss eligibility with your doctor before enrolling in a clinical trial.
