Randomized control study of post-operative pain in plasmaknife versus monopolar tonsillectomy

This study is for adults who are having their tonsils removed (tonsillectomy) because of recurrent or chronic tonsillitis. It compares two different surgical tools: the traditional method (monopolar diathermy) versus a newer device called the plasmaknife. The aim is to find out whether one method causes less pain and allows faster recovery after the operation. Patients rate their own pain levels using a simple scoring system over the days following surgery. You may be eligible if: - You are 18 years of age or older - You are having a tonsillectomy for recurrent or chronic tonsillitis - You can fill in a patient diary in English You may NOT be eligible if: - You have a history of a cancer or a peritonsillar abscess (quinsy) - You have a bleeding or clotting problem - You have a significant medical condition - You have implants that prevent the use of monopolar diathermy Talk to your doctor about whether this trial might be right for you.
