Summary

This study aims to better investigate the underlying problem behind the swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) experienced by many people diagnosed with inflammatory muscle disorders (Inclusion Body Myositis, Dermatomyositis and Polymyositis)

Eligibility

Sex: Both males and femalesMin Age: 18 YearssMax Age: 90 Yearss

Plain Language Summary

Simplified for easier understanding

This study is examining swallowing difficulties (called dysphagia) in people with inflammatory muscle diseases, including conditions called inclusion body myositis, dermatomyositis, and polymyositis. These conditions can weaken the muscles involved in swallowing, making eating and drinking difficult and potentially dangerous. The study aims to better understand where the swallowing problem is occurring, why it happens, and how best to treat it. Participants will undergo swallowing assessments to map out their specific difficulties. You may be eligible if: - You are between 18 and 90 years old - You have been diagnosed with an inflammatory muscle disease (inclusion body myositis, dermatomyositis, or polymyositis) - You are able to give informed consent - You have not had surgery to the head or neck You may NOT be eligible if: - You are unable to give informed consent - You have had surgery to the head or neck - You have any other neurological condition Talk to your doctor about whether this trial might be right for you.

This summary was AI-generated to explain the trial in plain language. It is not medical advice. Always discuss eligibility with your doctor before enrolling in a clinical trial.

using videofluoroscopy and manometry to investigate the mechanisms behind swallowing problems reported by patients with inflammatory muscle diseases Videofluoroscopy is a procedure where patients ingest radioopaque barium sulphaate mixed with small amounts of food/fluids. The procedure is x-rayed using a fluoroscope and recorded to allow frame-by-frame analysis of the swallowing dynamic. The procedure exposes patients to small amounts of ionising radiation (calculated as 0.2 milliseiverts). The Videofluoroscopy will be performed simulataneously with a manometric examination of the swallow. Participants have a purpose built manometric catheter (outside diameter 2.0 mm) inserted via the nares and positioned in the upper oesophageal sphincter. Recordings of upper oesophageal sphincter, oesophageal and pharyngeal pressures will be recorded. TOTAL time for both procedures =30 minutes approx.
