Summary
We are conducting a research study to better understand sleep and mental wellbeing in athletes. Sleep is an essential part of successful training and peak athlete performance. Good quality and adequate sleep are also important to support good mental health and wellbeing. There is not much information about sleep interventions to enhance sleep quality and quantity in elite/pre-elite athletes. Nor is there much information about the way that sleep affects mental health in elite/pre-elite athletes. The aim of this study is to learn more about whether a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) sleep intervention protocol can improve sleep and mental wellbeing in athletes. We hypothesise that CBT-I will be efficacious for improving sleep quality in healthy athletes.

Interventions
Our study will involve one participant group of athletes who will all be exposed to the sleep intervention. The group size will be approximately twenty (20) healthy athletes. Our sleep intervention is a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) protocol that has been developed for use with athletes. The CBT-I intervention will be administered via 5 x 30 min weekly group sessions and will be conducted by an endorsed Sport Psychologist who has professional training in CBT-I (Harley de Vos). The CBT-I intervention will include sleep education, environmental factors, sleep behaviours, cognitive strategies, and relaxation techniques. To monitor adherence to the intervention, a session attendance checklist will be completed before each session of the CBT-I intervention is administered.
