Conditions

Summary

This study investigates if the addition of a molecule, platelet derived growth factor (PDGF) produced by the body in the normal healing process of a tooth extraction socket will improve the amount of bone formed. At the time of extraction a bone graft will be placed in the socket with PDGF as the test and saline as the control. Six to eight weeks later the extraction site will have an implant placed. The dimensions of the jaw will be measured clinically and radiography at the time of extraction and implant placement. In addition a bone sample will be taken to analyse the amount of new bone formed.

This study will involve patients who require a dental extraction and subsequent dental implant placement. Their tooth will be removed as per standard protocols and the extraction site will be thoroughly cleaned, removing any infected tissue. The treating clinician will then mix a bovine and porcine derived bone grafting material with either platelet derived growth factor (0.5ml, half patient group, test) or saline (0.5ml, half of patient group, control) and placed into the extraction socket. The clinician will then place a porcine derived collagen membrane on top of the extraction socket and stitches will be placed. The procedure will add 5 minutes to the dental appointment. The treating clinician will be responsible for ensuring the application and the provision checked at regular study meetings. There is no adherence required by the subject.
