Min Age: 18 Years
Plain Language Summary
Simplified for easier understanding
An implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) is a small device placed in the chest that monitors heart rhythms and delivers a shock if it detects a life-threatening abnormal rhythm. While ICDs are life-saving, many people who receive them become more sedentary out of fear of triggering the device or experiencing a shock. This study tests whether a structured, guided exercise program can safely improve physical fitness, quality of life, and confidence in people who have recently received an ICD.
Participants are guided through an exercise protocol and monitored over six months. The study aims to show that regular physical activity is not just safe for ICD patients — it may actually improve their heart health and mental wellbeing.
You may be eligible if:
- You are over 18 years old
- You have had an ICD implanted for prevention of sudden cardiac arrest
- You can read, speak, and write English
- You can walk without assistive devices for at least 5–10 minutes per day
- You have reliable phone access for 6 months
You may NOT be eligible if:
- You have a serious mental disorder
- You regularly use illicit drugs
- You have had unstable angina, a heart attack, an ICD shock, or heart surgery in the past 3 months
- You are pregnant
- You are already doing more than 5 days of exercise per week
