Conditions

Summary

Major digestive surgery is associated with a significant rate of postoperative complications. To improve postoperative outcome, efforts are focused on postoperative course leading to the concept of rehabilitation. However, the rehabilitation concept does not allow to improve muscular and functional reserves at the time of surgery. Sarcopenia is a condition characterized by loss of skeletal muscle mass and function. Also, the prevalence of sarcopenia in patients with cancer is high and has a prevalence of around 25% in patients with pancreatic cancer, with a considerable impact on postoperative and survival outcomes. The hypothesis is the preoperative management of sarcopenia by a rehabilitation program could improve patients' operative outcomes by reducing the rate of postoperative complications.

Plain Language Summary

Simplified for easier understanding

This study is testing a "prehabilitation" program — a structured exercise plan before surgery — in patients with sarcopenia (low muscle mass and strength) who are scheduled to have major pancreatic cancer surgery. Low muscle mass before surgery is associated with worse outcomes, and this study aims to improve that. **You may be eligible if:** - You are scheduled for pancreaticoduodenectomy (a major surgery to remove part of the pancreas) for pancreatic cancer - You have been identified as sarcopenic (having low muscle mass/strength based on standard assessments) **You may NOT be eligible if:** - You are under 18 years old - You have cardiovascular disease or significant vascular disease that makes exercise unsafe - You are physically unable to exercise - Your surgery is an emergency Talk to your doctor to see if this trial is right for you.
