Plain Language Summary

Simplified for easier understanding

The COVERSCAN study uses MRI and other tests to look at how COVID-19 affects not just the lungs but multiple organs — including the heart, kidneys, and liver — in patients who had moderate to severe illness. Understanding which organs are damaged and how they recover over time is critical for managing long-COVID and preventing future health problems in survivors. Participants include adults who were hospitalized with moderate-to-severe COVID-19 confirmed by PCR, as well as healthy volunteers without prior COVID infection for comparison. MRI and blood tests are used to assess organ function. You may be eligible if: - You are 18 years or older - You had a confirmed COVID-19 infection (positive PCR test) - Your illness was moderate to severe (requiring hospitalization for more than 48 hours with signs of pneumonia or low oxygen) - OR you have no prior COVID infection (to serve as a control/comparison subject) You may NOT be eligible if: - You have a contraindication to MRI (e.g., pacemaker, ferromagnetic implants, severe claustrophobia, pregnancy) - You have significantly impaired kidney function (eGFR < 30) - You have signs of active COVID-19 infection on the day of your visit - You have another significant medical condition that might interfere with participation Talk to your doctor to see if this trial is right for you.

Interventions

DIAGNOSTIC_TESTMagnetic Resonance Imaging

We will undertake multi-organ MRI to assess the health of vital organs including the brain, heart, lung, kidneys and liver. We will additionally examine the burden of ongoing respiratory limitations, mental health problems and quality of life in survivors of COVID-19 at 3, 6 and 12 months.
