Plain Language Summary

Simplified for easier understanding

This trial looks at whether a specific type of anesthesia given through an IV (total intravenous anesthesia) affects cancer recurrence rates compared to gas-based anesthesia during esophageal cancer surgery. **You may be eligible if...** - You have primary esophageal cancer believed to be at stage 1, 2, or 3 (not spread beyond the esophagus) - You are scheduled for surgery with the goal of curing the cancer - You are between 18 and 85 years old - You are willing to be randomly assigned to one of the two anesthesia types **You may NOT be eligible if...** - You have had previous surgery for esophageal cancer (not counting biopsies) - You have other active cancers not in long-term remission - You have a serious overall health condition (ASA status 4 or higher) - You have an allergy or reaction risk to propofol or sevoflurane - Your other health conditions suggest a 25% or greater chance of dying within two years Talk to your doctor to see if this trial is right for you.
