Summary

Compare the effectiveness of automatic vs as-needed (PRN) post-hospitalization follow-up for children who are hospitalized for common infections.

Eligibility

Max Age: 18 Years

Plain Language Summary

Simplified for easier understanding

This study compares two approaches for following up with children after they leave the hospital for common infections (pneumonia, skin infection, gastroenteritis, urinary tract infection): scheduling automatic follow-up appointments versus letting parents call in only if needed. The goal is to find out which approach leads to better outcomes with fewer unnecessary visits. You may be eligible if... - Your child is under 18 years old - They were hospitalized for pneumonia, a skin or soft tissue infection, acute gastroenteritis, or a urinary tract infection - A parent speaks English or Spanish You may NOT be eligible if... - Your child has a complex chronic medical condition - Their infection required major surgery - They have an immune deficiency - A follow-up visit is already scheduled within 7 days of discharge - The infection was complicated by serious additional conditions (e.g., chest tube for pneumonia, renal abscess for UTI, hemolytic uremic syndrome for gastroenteritis) Talk to your doctor to see if this trial is right for you.

Interventions

BEHAVIORALAs-needed follow up

At hospital discharge, participant receives a recommendation for PRN follow-up. Recommendation informs participant that scheduling a follow-up visit is not needed at discharge and suggests that participant follow symptoms after discharge to decide if a visit is ultimately needed or not.

BEHAVIORALAutomatic follow-up

At hospital discharge, participant receives a recommendation for automatic follow-up. Recommendation instructs participant to schedule a follow-up visit and attend the visit even if symptoms get better.
