Wenzhou Gestational Diabetes Cohort

This cohort study is tracking women diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) — a form of diabetes that develops during pregnancy — and following both the mother and child over time to understand its long-term health consequences. GDM affects blood sugar control during pregnancy and is linked to higher risks of complications during delivery, as well as increased chances of developing type 2 diabetes later in life for the mother, and metabolic or developmental issues for the child. By studying a large group of participants over four or more years, researchers hope to identify key risk factors and better understand how GDM impacts family health. Women aged 18 or older who are diagnosed with GDM at 24–28 weeks of pregnancy, plan to deliver at Wenzhou People's Hospital, and intend to remain in Wenzhou with their child for at least 4 years are eligible. Women with cancer or other serious pre-existing medical conditions are excluded. Participants will be monitored through pregnancy and the postnatal period, with follow-up assessments for both themselves and their children. This research is important because GDM is increasingly common globally, and understanding its downstream effects can guide better screening, prevention, and management strategies to improve health for generations of affected families.
