Conditions

Summary

Femoral head fractures, often caused by high-energy trauma, pose significant challenges due to complications like avascular necrosis, post-traumatic osteoarthritis, and sciatic nerve damage. While traditionally treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) or total hip replacement (THR), hip arthroscopy has emerged as a minimally invasive alternative that reduces surgical trauma, offers direct fracture visualization and manipulation, and may result in shorter recovery times and fewer complications.

Plain Language Summary

Simplified for easier understanding

This study is evaluating whether hip arthroscopy — a minimally invasive surgical technique using a small camera inserted into the joint — is a viable treatment option for a specific type of femoral head fracture (Pipkin type 1), which is a fracture of the ball part of the hip joint typically caused by high-energy trauma. Traditional treatments involve open surgery or total hip replacement, but arthroscopy may reduce surgical trauma and speed up recovery. Adults with confirmed Pipkin 1 femoral head fractures who can undergo surgery within 2 weeks of the fracture and have no additional pelvic fractures or severe health conditions may be eligible. Participation involves undergoing the arthroscopic procedure and attending follow-up visits to assess recovery and outcomes. This summary was prepared to help patients understand the study in plain language.
