Summary

The aim of the aPPPle pilot study is to test feasibility and generate first results in preparation for a main study. The aPPPle study will investigate the exposure of operators, workers and residents to plant protection products (PPP) and potential physiological effects on blood biomarkers. The target plants are apple crops, as application occurs at higher altitudes and therefore higher drift/exposure is expected compared to ground-level application. The substances to be investigated are acetamiprid (an insecticide) and dithianon and dodine (two fungicides).

Plain Language Summary

Simplified for easier understanding

This pilot study investigates how much exposure orchard workers, nearby residents, and others have to certain pesticides — specifically the insecticide acetamiprid and the fungicides dithianon and dodine — used in apple orchards, and whether that exposure affects blood biomarkers. Because pesticides are applied at elevated angles in orchards, drift and exposure are potentially higher than in other agricultural settings. Adults aged 18 and older who belong to one of the defined study groups (operators, workers, or community members living near the orchards) and have health insurance are eligible to participate. Participation involves providing blood samples and answering study questionnaires at defined time points during and after pesticide application season.
