Strength Tracking From Wall Tichness Over Aortic Biomechanics

Enrollment

Start Date

Conditions

Summary

The aim of the study is to analyse the resected portion of aneurysmatic ascending aorta in order to assess its strength to rupture, standardise the various measurements performed within the lab and try to correlate these qualitative results with quantitative results (regarding aortic diameter, valve morphology and aortic wall thickness).

Eligibility

Min Age: 18 Years

Plain Language Summary

Simplified for easier understanding

The STORM study analyzes the mechanical properties of aortic tissue — specifically the wall of the ascending aorta — that is removed during planned surgery for aortic aneurysms (abnormal enlargement of the main heart artery), to understand how strong or fragile the tissue is and what factors predict rupture risk. Researchers correlate laboratory measurements of tissue strength with clinical data such as aortic diameter, valve anatomy, and wall thickness to potentially improve future surgical decision-making. Adults scheduled for elective cardiac surgery for aortic root or ascending aortic aneurysms who provide written informed consent are eligible; patients with prior cardiac surgery or acute aortic emergencies (such as acute dissection) are excluded. Participation involves consenting to have the surgically removed aortic tissue analyzed in the laboratory — no additional procedures are required beyond standard surgery.
