What is a Phase 1 trial?
Phase 1 is the first stage of human testing. A small group of healthy volunteers receives the investigational drug to evaluate safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics. Participants are monitored closely — often as inpatients at a clinical pharmacology unit — and compensated for their time. These studies are reviewed and approved by an ethics committee before enrollment begins.

How much do Phase 1 trials pay?
Compensation varies by study duration and intensity. Inpatient Phase 1 studies (multi-day residential stays) typically pay $1,000–$5,000+. Outpatient studies with follow-up visits may pay $200–$1,500. Specific amounts are disclosed in the informed consent document.
Are Phase 1 trials safe?
Phase 1 trials carry some risk as participants receive an investigational drug. All studies are reviewed and approved by an ethics committee (IRB/HREC) before enrollment begins. Participants are monitored continuously and can withdraw at any time.
What happens during a Phase 1 study?
Typically you attend a screening visit, then either stay at the clinical unit (inpatient) or visit regularly (outpatient). Blood draws, vital signs, and other assessments are conducted at scheduled intervals. The study team monitors you throughout and provides meals and accommodation for inpatient stays.
