Summary

This study examines opioid prescriptions that are given to patients following a wide variety of common surgery types. One week following going home, patients will be asked to fill out an online survey via their smart phone or via phone with a research nurse. The amount of opioid used will be examined and pain crises explored. This data will be used to create a prediction model to predict patients' requirements so that unused opioids in the community can be minimised while protecting patients from pain crises.

Plain Language Summary

Simplified for easier understanding

After surgery, many patients are given a supply of opioid pain medicines to take home. However, because it is hard to predict exactly how much pain each person will experience, opioids are often prescribed in larger quantities than needed. Unused opioids in the home can be misused, accidentally taken by others, or lead to dependence if taken longer than necessary. This study surveys patients one week after going home from surgery to find out how much of their prescribed opioid they actually used. The data collected — including the type of surgery, the amount of opioid prescribed, how much was used, and whether any pain crises occurred — will be used to build a prediction model. The goal is to help surgeons prescribe more accurately in the future, reducing leftover opioids in the community while ensuring patients have enough for pain relief. You may be eligible if you are 18 years or older, have had or are planning to have elective surgery, are able to give consent, and can respond to a survey by smartphone or phone call one week after discharge. There are no other significant exclusion criteria.

Interventions

Participants will be followed-up once only at one week after the participant is discharged home following surgery. They will be sent a SMS link to an online survey for completion on their smart phone.

Participants will be followed-up once only at one week after the participant is discharged home following surgery. They will be sent a SMS link to an online survey for completion on their smart phone. Alternatively, participants will be able to complete the survey by phone with a research nurse. The survey will take approximately 5 minutes to complete. The survey will examine: 1) The amount of discharge opioid that was used during the first week following discharge from hospital. 2) The amount of non opioid analgesics used during the first week following discharge from hospital. 3) Additional opioids used during the first week following discharge from hospital. 4) The source of any additional opioids (already at home, from a health professional) 5) Pain crises 6) Whether they saw a general practitioner, hospital or other health provider for pain relief. 7) What education they received about pain relief while in hospital before discharge home.
