Conditions

Summary

Minimally invasive pancreaticoduodenectomy remains one of the most challenging abdominal procedures. Safety and feasibility remain controversial when comparing minimally-invasive with open pancreaticoduodenectomy, especially for malignant tumors. The aim of this study was to compare minimally invasive and open pancreatoduodenectomy for short-term outcomes and long-term follow-up in a randomized trial.

Plain Language Summary

Simplified for easier understanding

This trial is comparing minimally invasive surgery (using small incisions and cameras) versus traditional open surgery for removing pancreatic cancer and nearby tissue, to determine which approach is safer and leads to better recovery. **You may be eligible if...** - You have pancreatic cancer, bile duct cancer, or ampullary cancer and are scheduled for a Whipple surgery (pancreaticoduodenectomy) - Imaging shows your cancer is removable (resectable or borderline resectable) - You are between 18 and 75 years of age **You may NOT be eligible if...** - You have a benign (non-cancerous) tumor of the pancreas - Your cancer has spread to surrounding major blood vessels or other organs - Your surgery had to be converted to an open operation due to difficulty - You are under 18 or over 75 years old Talk to your doctor to see if this trial is right for you.
