Plain Language Summary
Simplified for easier understanding
This study is testing whether an extract from banana flower stamens can help prevent or slow the progression of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) — the common enlargement of the prostate gland that affects many men as they age. An enlarged prostate can cause bothersome urinary symptoms such as a weak urine stream, frequent urination, and difficulty emptying the bladder. Currently, the standard treatments include medications (like alpha-blockers or 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors) and surgery, but researchers are exploring whether this natural plant extract could offer a gentle, complementary option.
The study is open to men aged 40–80 with mild to moderate urinary symptoms (measured by the IPSS score). Men who have taken standard prostate or urinary medications recently must wait out a washout period before joining.
You may be eligible if:
- You are a male aged 40 to 80 years
- Your IPSS (prostate symptom) score is between 7 and 18 (mild to moderate symptoms)
- You have not taken alpha-blockers or anticholinergics in the past 8 weeks
- You have not taken 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors or androgen suppressors in the past 16 weeks
- You have not been diagnosed with cancer
You may NOT be eligible if:
- You have a history of epilepsy, significant liver or kidney disease, cancer, endocrine disorders, or serious mental illness
- Your urinary symptoms are caused by something other than BPH
- You have residual urine volume above 250 mL
- You have had pelvic radiation or major pelvic surgery
- You are currently taking hormone-based prostate treatments
- You have participated in another clinical trial in the last 12 weeks
