Studying How Outpatient Water affEcts Risks With Drains (SHOWER Study)

The SHOWER study investigates whether patients who go home with surgical drains after procedures like breast reduction or panniculectomy (tummy skin removal) can safely shower with the drains in place, compared to those who avoid showering until the drains are removed. Surgical drains are tubes placed during surgery to remove excess fluid, and whether water exposure around these drains increases infection risk is an important clinical question. Participants will be randomly assigned to shower or not shower while they have their drains in place at home. Any infections or wound complications will be carefully tracked to determine if showering is safe. You may be eligible if: - You are 18 years or older - You are having a breast reduction, lower panniculectomy, or fleur-de-lis panniculectomy at Geisinger Medical Center with drain placement - You are able and willing to provide consent You may NOT be eligible if: - You are on antibiotics at the time of surgery or sent home on antibiotics afterward - You work in healthcare with direct patient contact - You are having a panniculectomy to qualify for a kidney transplant - You are having a ventral hernia repair at the same time as your panniculectomy - You are admitted to the hospital for more than one night Talk to your doctor to see if this trial is right for you.
