Conditions

Summary

Posttraumatic stress disorder in adolescence impairs neurobiological networks underlying cognitive, social and emotional skills. Neuroimaging research that seeks to identify the neural mechanisms of treatments for PTSD could lead to novel treatments, but progress has been slow using current methods. The proposed study uses an innovative approach to identify neural mechanisms of specific phases of trauma-focused therapy for youth with PTSD, allowing a new understanding of brain changes associated with the process of therapy.

Plain Language Summary

Simplified for easier understanding

This research study is looking at how the brain's connections change during therapy for PTSD in teenagers. Participants will receive a trauma-focused therapy called TF-CBT and also undergo brain MRI scans so researchers can track changes in brain activity over the course of treatment. **You may be eligible if:** - You are between 12 and 17 years old (and at Tanner Stage 2 or above, meaning you have entered puberty) - You have experienced interpersonal trauma (e.g., abuse, assault, or violence) - You have significant PTSD symptoms from at least one symptom in each of the four PTSD clusters for at least one month **You may NOT be eligible if:** - You are currently taking or have previously taken psychiatric medications - You have severe suicidal or homicidal thoughts - You are currently hospitalized - You are currently in other psychotherapy or have previously received TF-CBT - You have had a head injury with loss of consciousness lasting more than 5 minutes - Your IQ is below 85 - You have braces or metal in your body (MRI-incompatible) - You have psychosis, bipolar disorder, autism, or panic disorder - You have used substances frequently in the past 3 months Talk to your doctor to see if this trial is right for you.
