Summary

COPD is a preventable and treatable lung disease characterized by persistent and progressive airflow limitation. PRISm, on the other hand, is a spirometry pattern that does not meet COPD diagnostic criteria despite symptoms and functional impairments, but requires maintenance. PRISm can predispose to the development of COPD and exacerbations, and can reduce exercise capacity by reducing respiratory function and oxygen consumption. There are no studies in the literature comparing respiratory muscle strength, peripheral muscle strength, and oxygenation in PRISm, COPD, and healthy individuals. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate these parameters and compare them with healthy individuals.

Plain Language Summary

Simplified for easier understanding

This study compares patients with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), patients with a condition called PRISm (Preserved Ratio Impaired Spirometry, a pre-COPD breathing abnormality), and healthy individuals to better understand the differences in their physical function and health status. It is an observational study. **You may be eligible if...** - You are over 40 years old - You have a diagnosed with COPD (and are currently clinically stable, not in a flare-up), OR - You have been diagnosed with PRISm, OR - You are a healthy person with no known chronic disease - You are willing to voluntarily participate **You may NOT be eligible if...** - You have a COPD flare-up at the time of the study - You have severe orthopedic, neurological, or heart problems - You have any other lung disease in addition to your COPD or PRISm - You are on unstable medications - COPD patients who are diagnosed with PRISm (and vice versa) are not eligible for the other group Talk to your doctor to see if this trial is right for you.

This summary was AI-generated to explain the trial in plain language. It is not medical advice. Always discuss eligibility with your doctor before enrolling in a clinical trial.
