Summary

The aim of this project is to demonstrate that contrast enhanced ultrasound is an equally effective method for detecting synovitis in patients with haemophilia in whom the diagnosis of synovitis (joint capsule inflammation) from physical examination is unclear. Currently, MRI is the screening tool for synovitis in this population; however it is time consuming, claustrophobic for some patients and has long waiting times. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound is the application of ultrasound contrast medium to traditional medical sonography. Ultrasound contrast agents may be used during an ultrasound examination to improve the clarity and accuracy of a conventional ultrasound image.

Plain Language Summary

Simplified for easier understanding

People with haemophilia — a bleeding disorder — can develop joint damage called haemophilic arthropathy, where joint bleeding causes chronic swelling and inflammation in the joint lining (synovitis). This pilot study is testing whether contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) — an ultrasound technique using a contrast agent injected into the bloodstream — is as good as MRI (the current standard test) for detecting synovitis. If so, CEUS could offer a faster, less claustrophobic alternative to MRI. You may be eligible if: - You are between 18 and 70 years old - You have been diagnosed with haemophilic arthropathy - Physical examination alone cannot clearly confirm whether you have synovitis (joint inflammation) You may NOT be eligible if: - You are pregnant or breastfeeding - You have a right-to-left cardiovascular shunt or pulmonary hypertension - You have kidney impairment - You have unstable heart disease - You have a known allergy to ultrasound contrast agents Talk to your doctor about whether this trial might be right for you.
