Summary

This study examines the effectiveness of a mobile app compared to conventional methods in improving adolescents' sexual and reproductive health (SRH) knowledge in Southern Sarawak. Adolescents aged 16-19 will be randomly assigned to receive SRH education via a mobile app or traditional approaches like presentations and talks. The study hypothesises that the mobile app will be more effective in enhancing SRH knowledge, that adolescents' sexual behaviours will improve after gaining SRH knowledge, and that closer parent-adolescent relationships will promote positive SRH behaviours.

Plain Language Summary

Simplified for easier understanding

Many teenagers in Southeast Asia lack access to accurate, age-appropriate information about sexual and reproductive health (SRH). Gaps in knowledge can contribute to unintended pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections, and unhealthy relationship patterns. Traditional educational methods like lectures and pamphlets often don't resonate with young people. This study in Southern Sarawak, Malaysia, is comparing whether a specially designed mobile app is more effective than conventional SRH education (presentations and talks) for improving knowledge in adolescents. Researchers are also looking at how SRH knowledge affects behaviours and whether stronger parent-child relationships lead to healthier outcomes. Eligible participants are healthy young people aged 16 to 19 living in the Kuching and Serian areas of Sarawak who own a smartphone. Participants of all genders and ethnicities are welcome. People without a mobile phone that supports apps, those who are not local residents, or those with known mental health conditions are not eligible.

This intervention will be done within one (1) day training and will be conducted by the researcher. The mode of training will be a groups of 15 participants. The participants will use the mobile app in one-off throughout the 1-day training program (for 3 hours training) and continously use it for 3 months (the usage is daily for 30 minutes). The mobile app is a web-based app that consists of four modules, which cover: 1. Sexual Growth and Development 2. Sexuality, Teenage Pregnancy and Abortion 3. Sexually Risky Behaviour, Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) and Contraception 4. Communication Skills Every module covers information including short videos, written articles, short question in the quiz section, interactive graphics, quizzes, and puzzles. This web-based mobile app has been designed specifically for this study. To monitor the adherence of the app, we have linked the website with google analytics to monitor the usage by the participants. However, participants still have the right to withdraw from the study at any time.
