Summary

The purpose of this study has evolved and expanded since its inception. Originally the intent was to establish the functional, molecular and genetic profile of fibroblasts from Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD) patients as compared to carefully matched control subjects. While this remains among the objectives, the study has been expanded to undertake a fully powered cross-tissue systems genetics analysis of FMD, and now also the related arteriopathies spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) and cervical artery dissection (CvAD). The overall objective is to disclose the core biologic mechanisms of these disorders.

Plain Language Summary

Simplified for easier understanding

Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD) is a non-inflammatory, non-atherosclerotic disease of blood vessel walls that primarily affects women and can cause arterial narrowing, dissection, or aneurysm, particularly in arteries supplying the kidneys and brain. This study aims to identify genetic causes and biological underpinnings of FMD and related conditions (SCAD and cervical artery dissection) by collecting blood samples and clinical information. You may be eligible if... - You are 18 years old or older (or a child with parental consent) - You have a confirmed clinical diagnosis of FMD, spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD), or cervical artery dissection (CvAD) - OR you are an unaffected family member of a diagnosed patient - OR you are a healthy volunteer matched to a patient by age and gender - You speak English or Spanish You may NOT be eligible if... - Your life expectancy is less than 1 year - You have had an organ or bone marrow transplant - You have active autoimmune disease, HIV, illicit drug use, or prior malignancy - You have another form of vascular disease unrelated to FMD, SCAD, or CvAD - You have a family history of a different arteriopathy (e.g., Ehlers-Danlos syndrome) Talk to your doctor to see if this trial is right for you.
