Impact of Transfusional Practice on the Morbidity and Mortality of Patients in Intensive Care Unit

This observational study examines how blood transfusion practices in intensive care units (ICUs) affect patient outcomes such as survival and complications. Blood transfusions are commonly given to critically ill patients, but there is ongoing debate about the best transfusion thresholds — when to give blood, how much to give, and for which patients. By reviewing real-world data from ICU patients at two major French hospitals over a 6-year period, researchers aim to identify patterns in transfusion practice and their association with patient outcomes. This is a retrospective study, meaning it looks back at existing medical records rather than enrolling new patients prospectively.
