Polygraphy at Home for Neuromuscular Patients Under Non-invasive Mechanical Ventilation

This French study is evaluating whether home-based respiratory polygraphy (a simplified sleep breathing test) can effectively monitor patients with neuromuscular diseases who have just been started on non-invasive ventilation (NIV) — a mask-based breathing support used at night to help people whose weakened breathing muscles struggle to maintain adequate ventilation during sleep. Adults aged 18 and older with chronic respiratory failure due to a neuromuscular disease, who have just been prescribed NIV for the first time according to current guidelines, are eligible. Patients who live more than 40 km from the reference center, who are already dependent on the ventilator for more than six hours a day, or who have rapidly progressive conditions like ALS or Guillain-Barré syndrome are excluded. Participants will undergo home polygraphy monitoring to assess how well their ventilation is being managed by the NIV. If home testing proves effective and sufficient, it could replace some costly and burdensome in-hospital monitoring visits, allowing patients to be assessed safely and comfortably in their own environment — a significant improvement in quality of life for people already managing the demands of a chronic neuromuscular condition.
